Job Description
Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is seeking a highly experienced and qualified Chief Engineer – Marine to join our team in Kampala. This is a senior leadership role critical to the maintenance and operational efficiency of our marine assets, playing a key part in Uganda's national transport infrastructure.
About the Role:
As the Chief Marine Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic oversight for all marine engineering operations. You will ensure the reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of URC's vessels and related maritime equipment, directly contributing to the corporation's mission of enhancing rail and lake transport in Uganda.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide overall technical leadership and management for the marine engineering department.
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of all marine vessels and equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with national and international maritime regulations.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules and engineering procedures.
- Manage the marine engineering budget, ensuring cost-effective procurement of parts and services.
- Lead a team of marine engineers and technicians, providing mentorship and technical guidance.
- Ensure all marine operations adhere to the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.
- Prepare technical reports and provide expert advice to senior management on marine engineering matters.
- Collaborate with other departments to support integrated transport logistics across Uganda's railways and lake services.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field from a recognised institution. A Master's degree will be an added advantage.
- Must be a fully registered Engineer with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Uganda.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in marine engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior supervisory or management role.
- In-depth knowledge of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and shipboard systems.
- Proven experience with dry-docking procedures, surveys, and classification society regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent project management and budgetary control abilities.
