Job Description

UNHCR Uganda is seeking a dedicated Associate Protection Officer to join our team in Kampala. This is a vital role supporting protection activities for refugees and other persons of concern across Uganda. You will work under the supervision of the Protection Officer or Senior Protection Officer to ensure the rights and safety of vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support protection monitoring, individual case management, and community-based protection initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance on child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) to UNHCR and partner staff.
  • Assist in implementing protection strategies and mainstreaming protection across all UNHCR programming sectors.
  • Contribute to the analysis of protection risks and trends in the Ugandan context.
  • Support the development of protection information management systems.
  • Conduct capacity-building activities for government counterparts, local partners, and communities on protection standards.
  • Engage in advocacy efforts to promote the rights of refugees and other persons of concern in Uganda.
  • Coordinate closely with field offices and partners for an effective, nationwide protection response.

Requirements for the Role:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Law, International Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in protection, human rights, or community services, preferably in the Ugandan or East African context.
  • Strong understanding of international refugee law and protection principles.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural team.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of local Ugandan languages (e.g., Luganda, Swahili) is a strong asset.
  • Commitment to the core values of the United Nations.

What UNHCR Offers:

  • A meaningful career with a leading international humanitarian organisation.
  • Competitive United Nations salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and capacity development.
  • The chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of refugees and host communities in Uganda.

If you are passionate about human rights and protection work, we encourage you to apply. This position is based in Kampala, Uganda, with potential travel to field locations.
