Job Description

Join ISP as a Vanilla Cultivation Specialist in Uganda

ISP is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Agronomist to specialise in vanilla cultivation. This is a fantastic opportunity for an agricultural professional to apply their expertise to one of Uganda's most valuable and high-potential cash crops. You will play a key role in advancing sustainable farming practices and improving vanilla yields for local farmers and the organisation's projects.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Provide expert technical guidance and training on vanilla cultivation, propagation, and nursery management to farmers and field staff.
  • Develop and implement best agronomic practices for vanilla vines, including soil management, irrigation, shading, and pollination techniques.
  • Conduct field assessments and diagnose plant health issues, pests, and diseases affecting vanilla crops, recommending effective organic and integrated pest management (IPM) solutions.
  • Lead research and demonstration plots to trial new vanilla varieties, organic fertilisers, and climate-resilient farming methods suitable for the Ugandan context.
  • Collaborate with extension officers and partner organisations to develop training materials and lead farmer field schools (FFS) focused on vanilla.
  • Monitor crop development, harvest timing, and post-harvest handling processes to ensure premium bean quality.
  • Prepare detailed reports on project progress, challenges, and recommendations for continuous improvement.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a closely related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of practical, hands-on experience in vanilla cultivation, spice crops, or high-value horticulture within Uganda or the East African region.
  • Proven experience working directly with smallholder farmers and community-based organisations.
  • In-depth knowledge of sustainable and organic agricultural principles.
  • Excellent communication, training, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently and work in rural field conditions.
  • Strong computer literacy in MS Office.

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.
  • The opportunity to make a significant impact on Uganda's agricultural sector and farmer livelihoods.
  • A professional and supportive work environment with a leading organisation.
  • Engagement with innovative agricultural projects and value chains.

How to Apply: Interested and qualified candidates are invited to submit their application via the official portal. The closing date for applications is 5th January 2026.
