ISP, a leader in sustainable agriculture, is seeking a skilled and experienced Agronomist to specialise in vanilla cultivation in Uganda. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional passionate about high-value crops and agricultural development to contribute to Uganda's growing vanilla export sector.
About the Role
As a Vanilla Cultivation Specialist, you will provide expert technical guidance and support to farmers and our agricultural projects. You will be instrumental in improving vanilla yield, quality, and sustainability through modern farming practices tailored to the Ugandan climate and soil conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide on-the-ground technical advice and training to vanilla farmers on best cultivation practices.
- Develop and implement crop management plans to optimise vanilla bean production and quality.
- Conduct field research and trials to adapt new vanilla cultivation techniques to local conditions.
- Monitor crop health, identify pests and diseases, and recommend integrated pest management (IPM) solutions.
- Work with farmer cooperatives to promote sustainable and profitable vanilla farming.
- Prepare detailed reports on crop progress, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
- Stay updated on global vanilla market trends and organic certification requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of practical experience in agronomy, with specific experience in vanilla, coffee, or other high-value perennial crops highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Ugandan agricultural systems, soils, and climate.
- Proven experience in farmer training and extension services.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
- Ability to travel frequently to rural farming communities.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages (e.g., Luganda, Runyankole) is a strong asset.
