The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Agricultural Extension Officer to join our team in Gulu, Northern Uganda. About the Role
As an Agricultural Extension Officer with FAO in Uganda, you will be at the forefront of transforming agricultural practices in Northern Uganda. You will work directly with farming communities to enhance productivity, promote resilience, and support sustainable food systems. This position is based in Gulu and involves extensive fieldwork within the district and surrounding areas.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on technical support and training to farmers on modern, improved agricultural practices.
- Organise and conduct Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and other capacity-building training sessions for farmer groups.
- Promote and demonstrate climate-smart agriculture technologies suitable for Northern Uganda's context.
- Support the formation, governance, and strengthening of organised farmer groups and cooperatives.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on field activities and agricultural projects in the region.
- Collaborate closely with District Agricultural Officers (DAOs) and other development partners.
- Facilitate farmers' access to quality agricultural inputs, information, and profitable markets.
- Document project impact, success stories, and lessons learned for knowledge sharing.
Requirements and Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in agricultural extension services within Uganda.
- Strong knowledge of the agricultural landscape, challenges, and opportunities in Northern Uganda.
- Proven experience in facilitating farmer training and participatory rural appraisal methods.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and community facilitation skills.
- Ability to ride a motorcycle is mandatory (a valid Class A riding permit is required).
- Proficiency in local languages spoken in Northern Uganda (e.g., Acholi, Lango) is a strong advantage.
- Demonstrated commitment to working and living in rural community settings.
