Job Description
UNHCR Uganda is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Protection Associate to join our team in Kampala. This is a vital role focused on ensuring the protection and rights of populations of concern in Uganda, in line with international and national law.
About the Role:
Reporting to the Protection Officer, you will monitor protection standards, coordinate quality responses, and help design comprehensive protection strategies. You will work directly with communities, local authorities, and partners to mainstream protection methodologies across all operational sectors in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor the political, social, and economic developments in Uganda affecting the protection environment.
- Apply International and National Law, UN/UNHCR policies, and codes of conduct consistently.
- Provide advice on protection issues and liaise with Ugandan authorities for documentation issuance.
- Assist in conducting refugee status determination and eligibility procedures.
- Manage individual protection cases, including SGBV and child protection, and intervene in incidents like refoulement.
- Contribute to national-level child protection and education plans.
- Identify durable solutions (repatriation, local integration, resettlement) for populations of concern.
- Facilitate effective information management by providing disaggregated data.
- Participate in capacity-building initiatives for Ugandan authorities, institutions, and NGOs.
- Ensure implementing partners in Uganda comply with global protection policies and standards.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
- For candidates with a High School Diploma: 4 years of relevant work experience.
- For candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher: 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Relevant field of study: International Law, Political Science, or a related field.
- Certificates in Protection Learning Programme are desirable.
- Essential Functional Skills: IT-Computer Literacy, knowledge of Protection-related guidelines and Refugee Protection Principles.
- Language: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages or local Ugandan languages is an asset.
