Job Description
FHI 360, a leading international non-governmental organisation, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Community Engagement Specialist to join our team in Mbarara, Uganda. This is a senior-level opportunity for a professional passionate about improving public health outcomes through community-led interventions in Western Uganda.
About the Role:
As a Community Engagement Specialist, you will be at the forefront of designing, implementing, and monitoring community-based health programmes. You will work directly with local stakeholders, community health workers, and beneficiaries to ensure our interventions are effective, culturally appropriate, and sustainable. This role is critical to our mission of creating lasting change in the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement innovative community engagement strategies to improve health outcomes in Mbarara and surrounding districts.
- Mobilise and build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including local government, community leaders, and health facilities.
- Recruit, train, and provide ongoing support to a network of community health workers (VHTs).
- Develop and manage community activity plans, ensuring alignment with project goals and donor requirements.
- Monitor and evaluate community interventions, collecting data and reporting on impact and outcomes.
- Facilitate community dialogues and feedback mechanisms to ensure programme accountability and responsiveness.
- Prepare timely and accurate activity reports for project management.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- A Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Development Studies, or a related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in community engagement, mobilisation, or social behaviour change, preferably within the public health sector in Uganda.
- Strong understanding of the local context in Western Uganda, particularly the Mbarara region.
- Fluency in English and at least one major local language spoken in the region (e.g., Runyankole).
- Excellent training, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of community programmes.
