Environmental Officer Job at Kakira Sugar Limited in Jinja, Uganda

Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL), a leading sugar manufacturer in Uganda, is seeking a dedicated and qualified Environmental Officer to join our team in Jinja. This is a critical role for ensuring our operations meet the highest environmental standards and contribute to sustainable development in Uganda.

Overall Purpose of the Job:
The Environmental Officer will actively monitor, maintain, and protect environmental standards in accordance with Ugandan legal and regulatory requirements, ISO 14001:2018 standards, and company policies within Kakira Sugar Limited's operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Liaise with Heads of Department and Section Heads to ensure full compliance of KSL operations with all environmental laws and regulations in Uganda.
• Coordinate with relevant government bodies, stakeholders, and local communities on all environmental matters.
• Work closely with the Safety Health and Environment Manager to implement and monitor approved environmental strategies, policies, and programmes.
• Promote and drive sustainable development initiatives across all KSL operations.
• Conduct regular environmental audits, monitoring, and reporting to ensure adherence to standards.
• Develop and deliver environmental awareness training for staff.

Requirements and Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, or a related field from a recognised institution.
• Proven experience in environmental management, preferably within the manufacturing, agricultural, or industrial sector in Uganda.
• Strong knowledge of Ugandan environmental laws (NEMA regulations) and international standards like ISO 14001.
• Excellent communication, liaison, and report-writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with various departments and external partners.
