Chief Marine Engineer Job in Kampala - Uganda Railways Corporation (URC)
Job Description
Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is seeking a highly experienced and qualified Chief Marine Engineer to join our team in Kampala. This is a senior leadership role critical to maintaining and advancing Uganda's marine transport infrastructure on Lake Victoria and the national inland waterways.
As the Chief Marine Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic direction for all marine engineering operations. You will oversee the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of URC's fleet and marine assets, ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
β’ Provide expert technical leadership for all marine engineering projects and daily operations.
β’ Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for vessels, engines, and related marine equipment.
β’ Ensure strict compliance with national and international maritime safety regulations and standards.
β’ Manage the marine engineering budget, procure parts, and control operational costs effectively.
β’ Lead, mentor, and develop a team of marine engineers and technical staff.
β’ Oversee dry-docking operations, major repairs, and vessel surveys.
β’ Prepare technical reports, specifications, and documentation for marine assets.
β’ Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless port and rail logistics integration.
Requirements & Qualifications:
β’ Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a closely related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
β’ Must be a fully registered Engineer with the Uganda Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
β’ Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in marine engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior supervisory or management role.
β’ In-depth knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, and auxiliary ship systems.
β’ Proven experience with vessel classification society rules and Ugandan maritime regulations.
β’ Strong leadership, problem-solving, and project management skills.
β’ Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
