Vanilla Agronomist β Cultivation Specialist Job at ISP Uganda
ISP is seeking a skilled and experienced Agronomist β Vanilla Cultivation Specialist to join our team in Uganda. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional passionate about sustainable agriculture and the lucrative vanilla value chain to make a significant impact. You will play a key role in advancing vanilla farming practices, supporting local farmers, and enhancing crop quality and yield across our projects.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide expert technical guidance and training to vanilla farmers on modern cultivation techniques, including propagation, pollination, and crop management.
- Develop and implement sustainable farming protocols to improve vanilla bean quality, yield, and disease resistance.
- Conduct field research, soil analysis, and trials to adapt best agronomic practices to local Ugandan conditions.
- Monitor crop health, identify pests and diseases, and recommend integrated pest management (IPM) solutions.
- Collaborate with extension officers and farmer cooperatives to build capacity and ensure knowledge transfer.
- Prepare detailed reports on crop progress, challenges, and recommendations for project stakeholders.
- Stay updated on global trends and innovations in vanilla cultivation and organic farming.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of proven hands-on experience in vanilla cultivation or a similar high-value crop.
- Strong practical knowledge of the entire vanilla value chain, from nursery to post-harvest handling.
- Excellent communication and training skills, with fluency in English and at least one local language (e.g., Luganda, Runyankole).
- Ability to travel frequently and work in rural farming communities across Uganda.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and report writing.
- A valid motorcycle riding permit is a strong advantage.
